How To Create Your Dream Closet On A Budget

Updated: Jul 25, 2020

Organization can save you from a lifetime of discontentment.

Have you ever became so angry and frustrated with yourself simply because you cannot find what it is that you need when you need it most? I mean truly ponder on that thing for a minute. Let's be real, there has been a time when you had an event to attend in less than 30 minutes and you couldn't for the life of you find this one particular blouse that you haven't worn in ages. And at the exact moment of having a few minutes to finish getting ready you refused to change your outfit because your brain was determined to find that ONE SHIRT.

I can't express enough how many times my attitude has been altered completely prior to me arriving at an event due to the episode of me going insane over not being able to find what I needed in my mess of a closet. Y'all this has to end. Ignoring piles and piles of clothes, seeing distorted shoes everywhere, and hoarding different clothing pieces that you haven't acknowledge since 5 years ago has to cease. One day during the pandemic of COVID-19 I decided that enough was enough, and I chose to use quarantine as a time to detoxify my life, starting FIRST with my closet.

“Organization plus functionality equals good vibes only.”

After a couple of hours scrolling through Pinterest and doing some online shopping for containers and storage bins I was able to develop a 5-Step Detox Remedy on how to organize any size closet.

Step 1: Declutter

  • Empty out your closet and sort everything into 3 piles: trash, donations, and keepers. Mind you if you're experiencing a hard time with deciding whether or not to keep a clothing piece answer this question. Do I see myself wearing this in the next 6 months?

Step 2: Categorize

  • Arrange by colors, special occasions, and/or seasons.

Step 3: Create storage space

  • For smaller closets try using bins and/or install extra shelving in order to hold multiple items.

Step 4: Uniformed hangers

  • Try sticking to the same color and texture hangers throughout your closet. This gives your space a neat and precise look.

Step 5: Make it functional

  • Place all frequently used items/objects in places with easy access. This factor helps to eliminate the last minute scrambling affect mentioned earlier, also it decreases the chances of creating a mess by constantly knocking things over or unfolding items in order to find what you need.

Applying these simple 5 steps of organizing my closet has saved me so much time and has kept me in good spirits when getting my day started. Not only did I choose to say no to dysfunction in my closet but I also chose to spice it up too!!

Now I know making your closet "cute" is not top priority for some, but hey what can I say. I love the idea of making my closet pop just like my clothes, hello somebody! Having the ability to play around with your sense of creativity by allowing your personality to be visible within any form is what Shifting House is about. So with the help of Pinterest and a small purchase from Amazon I was able to think of a color scheme for my closet space along with adding in an accent wall by utilizing wallpaper.

Adding a splash of color and patterns was a true game changer. Now I'm able to display some of my favorite pieces against this newly created accent wall along with establishing an aesthetic within a small space.

I challenge you to take that step of organizing your closet and see what beautiful masterpiece you form after doing so. For more pictures and videos on how I organized and renovated my rental closet space, check out my Instagram page.
